Reggaeton women: Becky G, Karol G, Rosalia and many others ...

Reggaeton has always been classified as a genre of music played mostly by male voices. However, there are names that claim space and gender equality in songs that are about partying, love, sex and debauchery.

The world of Latin American music such as trap, hip-dop, reggaeton, practically the whole urban genre is undergoing a musical globalization.

20 years after the likes of Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Jennifer Lopez brought Latin pop to the Italian music scene for the first time.

2019, however, has been a great year for revolutionary artists, who continue to climb the podium in 2020.

Here is a list of the fast-rising female singers advocating female empowerment in the Urban music scene.

1 – Karol G.

Acclaimed by many as the new queen of reggaeton, Carolina Giraldo better known by her stage name such as Karol G, has been making a name for itself for over a decade. Born in The City of Eternal Spring, Medellin, this singer and songwriter began her musical journey when she participated as a child (aged seven) in the Colombian version of X-Factor.

But it wasn't until 2012, when he debuted alongside fellow reggaeton singer Reykon "El Líder" with the single 301 that he began to gain widespread success.

Although his career said he made a breakthrough in the rest of Latin America when he collaborated with Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny on Ahora Me Llama, last year he climbed the global charts with the Anglo-Latin collaboration Tusa with female rapper Nicki Minaj already has over 23 million views on Youtube.

Some of his previous collaborations include stars such as Nicky Jam, Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Cosculluela and Ozuna.


2 – Natti Natasha

This 33-year-old Dominican bombshell, Natalia Alexandra Gutierrez rose to fame when she decided to move to the Bronx at the age of 18 to pursue her music career.

There she met the king of kings, Don Omar, who signed her with his record label Orfanato Music Group and in 2010 released Hold Ya (Remix) with Gyptian and Don Omar, followed by the single Dutty Love the following year.

He has also collaborated with Bad Bunny, RKM and Ken-Y, Farruko and Cosculluela. In 2017, the “Big Boss” Daddy Yankee released the song Otra Cosa with Natasha; but it was her single Criminal, starring Ozuna, which became her first global hit as the most viewed music video of 2017; reaching the top five of the Billboard Hot Latin Songs Chart.

3- Becky G

Rebbeca Marie Gomez, aka Becky G, is a Mexican-American singer, songwriter and actress.

It was first spotted by famed producer Dr. Luke in 2011.

With a multifaceted career at the age of 23, some of his accomplishments include two No. 1 on the Airplay Latin Billboard charts with her reggaeton singles Mayores ft. Bad Bunny e Sin Pijama ft. Natti Natasha, as well as starring roles in the Power Rangers film and guest star in the Fox Empire television series.

Speaking of female power, she is the second female artist to have the most hits, after Shakira. Signed with RCA / Sony Music Latin, he has toured alongside stars such as Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, J Balvin, Fifth Harmony and Jason Derulo.

His list of collaborations with urban artists includes Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, Yandel, CNCO, among others.


4- Elettra Lamborghini

Elettra Lamborghini is the daughter of Tonino Lamborghini and the granddaughter of Ferruccio Lamborghini, founder of the brand. Born in Bologna in 1994, she has Miura as her middle name.

His singing career exploded in 2018 with “Pem pem”, a video with 4.3 million views in less than a week. He participated in the single by Guè Pequeno “Lamborghini (RMX)” together with Sfera Ebbasta. “Pem Pem,” was presented live, during the halftime show of an NBA game at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in January 2018.

5 – Flour

La nena fina, Farina Pao Paucar franco better known as Farina, is a Colombian singer of Peruvian and Chinese origin.

She was one of the first women to make reggaetón music in Colombia and one of the pioneers of the genre in the country. Just like fellow reggaetonera Karol G, she participated in the talent show X Factor (Colombia) in 2005.

Although he won 3rd place, the following year he released his first album Yo Soy Farina which was a mix of dancehall and R&B. She was off the radar for a few years before returning as an actress in 2011.

Since then he has worked incessantly and collaborated with artists such as the Colombian duo Rayo y Toby, Ñengo Flow, Bryant Myers, J Alvarez, Maluma and others .


6 – Rosalía

The Rosalia! It needs no introduction especially these days.

This 26-year-old Spanish singer and songwriter paved the way for fellow Spanish artists in the urban sector.

Merging contemporary flamenco with Latin hip-hop, he has received international recognition after several collaborations including artists such as J Balvin, Ozuna, Travis Scott and others. He has already won five Latin Grammy Awards and one Grammy award.

With her exuberant nails and streetwear style, her message is clear: it's about feminine power!


7 - Baby K.

Baby K is a singer, and more precisely a rapper singer. His career began to have an important turning point in 2006 thanks to the collaboration with Amir.

In 2008 he released his first solo ep called "SOS" and two years later the second called "Female Alpha".

The Killer Party Tour then starts and Baby K makes itself known nationally. In 2015 the second album titled "Kiss bang bang" was released. In this album stands out the single winner of the platinum disc: “Roma Bangkok” sung together with Giusy Ferreri.

In 2018 he published the summer catchphrase "From zero to one hundred" and in 2019 he published "Playa"Which won many radio plays in the summer of 2019.

As for her career which, unlike that of many colleagues, was not sudden but built over time, Baby K stated in an interview with the weekly TU Style that: “We are in the era where everything is fast and is consumed quickly. Mine was a long journey, not a blaze. 


8 – Cazzu

This Argentine trapper / singer / composer started singing cumbia and then rock before moving to the urban scene.

Though still retaining the goth-punk-emo look, Cazzu (aka Julieta Cazzucheli) gained popularity in the Latin trap music scene after Loca's release, with her fellow Argentine trap singers Khea and Duki.

The song became even more popular after Bad Bunny did the remix. She has since been dubbed the "Queen of Argentine Trap" and has collaborated with other modern trap and reggaeton artists such as Maikel Delacalle, Alex Rose, Dalex, Lenny Tavarez and Rauw Alejandro.


9- Anitta

Often described as a "sex symbol", this Brazilian beauty Larissa de Macedo Machado who bears the stage name Anitta has been entertaining the world with her voice since she was eight.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, the 27-year-old rose to fame in 2013 with her carioca funk and dance-pop.

Her reggaeton crossover began when she met Colombian superstar J Balvin, who featured her in the remix of her song Ginza (2016). His second collaboration with J Balvin, Downtown became such an international success that it made the list of the 50 most performed songs in the world, entering the "Top 50 Global".

He has also collaborated with other reggaeton artists such as Maluma, Ozuna, Natti Natasha and others.

Her advocacy for female empowerment and possession of her sexuality, along with her large LGBTQ following, ranked her the 15th most influential artist in the world on social networks (North American Billboard 2017 Social 50 ranking).


10 – Paloma Mami

Born in Manhattan, New York (1999) to Chilean parents, Paloma Castillo aka Paloma Mami rose to fame when she participated in the Chilean talent show Rojo, El Color of talent in 2018.

The Chilean-American singer then released her first single Not Steady and later that same year was signed by Sony Music Latin, becoming the first Chilean artist to sign for a major international record label.

Last year her collaboration with the Spanish rapper C. Tangana No Te Di Besar saw her reach over 25 million views on Youtube.

With a powerful yet delicate voice, her music is a fusion of Latin Urban, R&B and Trap / Soul. “My music is a more elegant urban style, with no references to drugs and sex.

It is soft and sophisticated but with a strong impact, as you can see in the video. And this is the image that I intend to project throughout my career. "


11 – Bad Gyal

She is Spain's promising new star (and a new dancehall hybrid). Alba Farelo known professionally as Bad Gyal, was born in Catalonia in 1997.

This Catalan singer and songwriter gained popularity when she released her reinterpretation of the famous Rihanna Work hit, Pai in April 2016.

Blending his native Catalan with Spanish and English, his dancehall, reggaeton and trap musical weaves.


12 – Lola Indigo

Born in Madrid (1992), Miriam Doblas Muñoz, better known by her stage name of Lola Indigo, is a Spanish singer and dancer.

Her journey to stardom began as a dance teacher and in 2010 she took part in the Spanish talent show Fama Revolution.

Subsequently, she appeared as a backup dancer for A-star artists such as Chris Brown, Enrique Iglesias, including others. But she became a national celebrity when she entered and won 16th place in the Spanish talent contest Operación Triunfo (2017).

The following year she formed a supergroup (she and four dancers) who sang and danced traps, reggaeton and funk. And a few months later he began his solo career.

Some of her collaborations since then include fellow Spanish artist Mala Rodriguez, Joey Montana, Charly Black.

His latest single to be released includes Colombian rapper Lalo El Bratt and Puerto Rican reggaetonero Rauw Alejandro.


13 - SOFIA REYES

After being discovered on YouTube, this bilingual pop star from the northern Mexican city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, became the first signed singer from Prince Royce's D'Leon records, a label created by the Latinx star with Warner Music Latina.

She released singles from “Now Forever” in 2013 and dropped her debut album, Louder!, In 2017. Since then, she has become one of the favorite singers of the likes of Slushii, Cheat Codes and James Arthur.


14 - LALI

After starting as an actor in childish shows like Rincon de luz and Casi Angeles before joining the five-person pop band Teen Angeles, the Argentine beauty (nee Mariana Esposito) has moved on to an adult solo career with a new name d Art: Lali began as a nickname among friends and family - and the release of her debut album, A Bailar, in 2014. 15 - Mariah

A rising star in the urban world where he is very male dominated (Ozuna, J Balvin, Bad Bunny), Mariah Angeliq, who simply goes by her name, is here to prove that girls can be bosses too.

Argentina's Martina Alejandra Stoessel Muzlera ended with the lead role in the 2012 Disney Channel telenovela Violetta, which helped reach her record deal with Disney's Hollywood Records in 2015.

Releasing solo material under his stage name Tini, he dropped two albums with third on the road and was the featured artist on the trail of MAX, Jonas Blue and Alesso.

Her latest single "Fresa", a collaboration with Colombian reggaeton singer Lalo Ebratt, is a perfect example of the delicious Latin pop she has in her discography.


17 - Nick Nicole

Nicole Denise Cucco (Rosario, Argentina, 25 August 2000), artistically known as Nicki Nicole, is an Argentine singer-songwriter.

In 2019, she rose to fame with her single "Wapo Traketero", garnering over a million views on YouTube thanks to her music video in a short period of time after being released on the platform.

The song became a viral phenomenon and managed to enter Billboard's Hot 100 list in Argentina.

On November 8, 2019, Nicole released her debut album Memories, debuting at number 89 on iTunes in Argentina.

On May 13, 2020 Nicole released the song “Colocao“, With which she managed to get more than a million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours and was the most listened to song in Argentina for a week.
